Phone, this is the most advanced lesson in this series. If you just want to start sending, use the last few emails and skip this one for now.
I was talking with a friend recently about lead lists, and we ended up on the question that comes up every time volume starts to grow: how many of these people would we honestly be excited to work with? It is easy to celebrate a large count because the number is visible and immediate. Quality takes longer to reveal itself. You see it in whether the company has the problem you solve, whether the timing makes sense, and whether the person you contacted can actually move the conversation forward. I have made the mistake of treating list size as progress. It creates activity, but activity and progress are not the same thing. A smaller list built around a clear reason to reach out often creates more useful conversations than a huge export assembled from broad filters. The work starts with deciding what a good fit really looks like. Industry and headcount help, but they are rarely enough. Recent hiring, a change in offer, a new market, or a shift in sales motion can say much more about timing. Once those signals are clear, research becomes less like collecting records and more like noticing where help might be welcome. I also try to leave room for judgment. A database can tell you that a company matches the rules, but a quick look at its site can tell you whether the match makes sense. That final pass catches outdated records, odd edge cases, and businesses that technically qualify but are plainly wrong for the offer. There is no prize for sending to someone who never should have been on the list. Good lead generation feels quieter than people expect. It is a series of careful choices about whom to contact, why now, and what useful conversation could follow. When those choices are sound, the numbers usually take care of themselves.
But if you want an unfair advantage, keep reading.
Most lead lists are TRASH. You add your little industry filters and you think you built a targeted list. You are wrong. The cold email pros take their list building to the next level with these 2 steps.
STEP 1: LEAD QUALIFICATION Use AI to remove 30-50% of bad-fit leads. Use a tool like Consulti Hypercleaner to go through each record and make sure that person is actually a good fit for your offer. This will increase reply rates by 3X alone.
STEP 2: AI PERSONALIZATION Research something about that lead or their business that you can use in an opener as a pattern interrupt. There are a lot of ways to do this, but an easy way is using Perplexity to find details you can use that are not easily accessible. Hypercleaner can help with this too!
My rule: only use 2-8 words of AI-generated personalization per email. That's it.
Generic compliments about their "impressive growth" or referencing their college from LinkedIn makes you sound like a robot. Skip it entirely if you can't be genuinely specific.
Public AI templates are overused. Millions of people run the same prompts in the same tools. Build your own custom prompts that generate openers that nobody else is using.
Hopefully that helps!
Your friend in lead gen,
-Jay
